Tallahassee, Florida: Celebrtion & Growth
Tallahassee is the capital of Florida. The city gained this status in the 19th Century, mostly because of its distance between two major Spanish colonies. It was considered a small Southern town until World War II. By this time, Florida State University had firmly established Tallahassee as a college town. While growth was being encouraged in neighboring cities like Orlando, Tampa Bay and Miami, Tallahassee government was moving to get state commitment to their growth. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the city saw movement in this direction. Today, Tallahassee is a thriving community, proud of its heritage and contributions to sports and a cultured lifestyle.
Tallahassee FL Community
Tallahassee’s Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Affairs Department wants to ensure all of its residents have an active lifestyle. There are public pools, community centers and events. A true home for sports enthusiasts, the city has activities of all types throughout the year. This includes golf, tennis, basketball, baseball and aquatics. One can do volunteer work as a youth coach, at a community center or help keeping the city’s parks clean. There are a great number of parks and trails for residents to enjoy, including Tom Brown Park.
Filled with vitality and culture, the city is cosmopolitan and charming, a smorgasbord of performing arts, politics, history, nature and adventure. For promising looks at future artists, there is the Art Galleries at Tallahassee Community College and the Artport Gallery. Enjoy some old fashioned a capella performances at the Barbershop Harmony Society. The eco-friendly will love the Beadel House at Tall Timbers, a conservancy focused on wildlife, land and fire ecology.
Tallahassee likes to keep a busy calendar. Come the fall, there’s the annual benefit and fundraiser, Oktoberfest. There’s food, beer and a silent auction. They look to raise community awareness for breast cancer and Down Syndrome with, respectively, Cards for a Cure and the Buddy Walk & Family Fun Day. The Forgotten Coast Black Bear Festival is for the entire family. There’ll be live music, food, educational exhibits and exploration of bear habitats.
The state of Florida is celebrating its 500th birthday and the entire city of Tallahassee is at the party. And it’s never too late to get invited. Tallahassee boasts some of the most affordable and exemplary properties in that state, a well regarded school system, excellent options for shopping, dining, entertainment, art and, of course, college football. There is a lot to appreciate in this diversified city.
